As site responsive artists, myself and Cameron Muir are interested the the often organic changes a building goes through during its lifespan. As Prism at Toast was effectively the last exhibition at the space in its current reincarnation, we wanted to highlight the past uses of the space and celebrate the architectural malleability of Federation House - more specifically, it's suspended ceiling.
For the exhibition, we created a tall and intrusive construction using surrounding elements of the buildings former use as an office space.
We are fascinated in artificial lowered ceilings that try to make the space feel comfortable, warm, and provide inhabitants a sense of security. Yet often the feeling inside these spaces is claustrophobic and depressingly bland.
